Iv been cutting 10 yrs as a barber. I’m a chill dude. More of a hippie. I don’t like tension or being uncomfortable. I get it from customers all the time. Talking down to me or acting like hair is such an easy thing to master. I do a thorough consultation and get to the point that I feel good about what we’re doing. If they keep trying to nitpick me I’ll kick them out of my chair If they don’t stop. There’s a lot less people cutting hair now cuz of Covid so treat me bad n u can go to a discount shop

I am now 18 and i am barber since 15 years old along with my mom ,and during this 3 years of experience as a none certified barber i can say practice makes a succesful barber or stylist, constant practice ! Training centre are good to learn strategie and how to communicate ,but if you are going in a training centre with a bunch of theory and less practice ,thats a bad news !!

Golfer here, best of luck getting back into the saddle. I had a really bad leg injury a few years back that stopped me from playing but I'm glad I got back in even if I was awful for a while.

I usually tell them that i'm fresh out of prison and they typically don't talk after that

I think a lot of time, some people just want the extra attention and need coddling- it’s not necessarily about their hair. I don’t have the patience for that. If you give in, they will keep on. I try to nip in the bud. I will only do what they tell me to do, within reason. I’m there to make money, not be your therapist.

I live in a very rural area, and whenever I see a person with the kind of hair style that I want, I ask them who does their hair and we talk about hair and then I will find out information on where to go to get my hair done. I've been pretty lucky, the girl who does my hair now owns her own shop with maybe one other person working there and she never rushes through my hair cut or anything, makes sure she checks the layers, etc. so I give her a very good tip. I have had some bad hair cuts in my lifetime, but asking people who does their hair is a good way to find someone to do it, in my opinion.

I have been a licensed cosmetologist for one year and I have experienced ladies telling me that their sons get “butchered” haircuts and you are so right with everything you said ????

You cannot please everyone! Just trust your instincts ask yourself is it really worth your time to try to please the unreasonable client! How much is your peace of mind worth to you? Life is too short and your workplace should be a positive peaceful friendly educational environment! No negative Nellie's! 38 years as a hairstylist in Nevada!

I think that's the main issue is communication, need to have a realistic understanding. Why I try to stay away from terms like "even" "balanced" "blend" "taper" usually I get a blank stare because the person was probably in nursing school a week ago. Exactly like 2 stylist almost started a scene right there in the salon with me. Or the barber who doesn't use his shears so cuts the hair with clippers in 5/10 minutes. My advice use a picture kinda get a grasp on how long they'll been cutting hair and hope for the best.

Your hairline is looking good man. I thought the hair piece you had also looked really good.

I always have a bad time at the salon lol. I don’t even ask for anything extreme, just to have it pushed back, no product or something natural-looking and they always mess up on the sides and make it uneven. I went to a barber and got the best haircut in a long time ???? although, my dad my brother always get good haircut at those places lol

Hey Stephen, I had a perm last year and my hair looks slightly curly at the ends of the top of my head. I had cut my hair several times and it still has that curly tip end and I don’t know how to get rid of it. My hair is like Asian hair but it’s Hispanic hair.

Hello Stephen, could you please make a haircut tutorial video for River Phoenix's hair in the movie My Own Private Idaho? I'd be really interested to see your approach!

Barber here. Omg, yeah, most people in this category are the issue. They have unrealistic expectations and want you to do the impossible. Like, don't come in with a photo of a dude with full, thick amazing hair, while you have extreme diffuse thinning on top, and then get pissed cause I can't make your hair like it looks in the photo??? Or they have straight hair that lays flat, and they get a photo of someone with wavy hair and then they aren't happy that their flat straight hair can't magically look like the person in the photo. We can cut your hair in the style you want, but you gotta accept that we can't magically change the structure of your hair and turn you into a brand new person. I have had some people whine the entire haircut about other barbers they have tried and it feels like shit! It's so stressful trying to make them happy as they dump all their emotional issues on you around their hair. I have had a few clients tell me how to cut their hair… like "yeah, this part here on my fringe, pull it out like this and then chip into it" ohhhh do people tell you how to do your job too? Do your clients stand around and stop you as you work, to show you how to do your job? No? That's right, so please don't do it to us.
