it feels like listening to my story! i have similar curly hair (also straighter at the top), and i know you're talking about south asian culture but north african culture suffers from the same thing. My mum religiously blew dry my hair all my childhood and elementary school until i was introduced to the straightener in 8th grade and by 11th grade my hair was so damaged and fallen i had to cut it short. it is still a struggle taking care of it now because of lack of products in my country and the fact that i have to have it in a bun or ponytail most of the timedo you have any advice for that? i know you keep you hair down in all your videos but if you have to have it up how do you do it without ruining your curls and damaging your hair. it's been insanely dry

I think as teenagers and young adults, we seem programmed to always want the opposite of what we have. I have poker straight hair and all through my teens and university I spent hours curling my hair!

Loved your video and your story, Sheen!!! I’ve had a similar journey with my curls (minus the daily hair frying, because it was too much effort for me!) ???? I am South Asian too!Hoping there’s more awareness and acceptance towards curly hair in the future! ????

Mashallah your hair is beautiful! i definitely had a similar experience with my curly hair journey, especially being south Asian where black, long straight hair is seen as the norm in terms of beauty standards and no one knows how to look after curly hair and nor is it seen as desirable in south Asian communities. i always thought my hair was broken but im so glad i learnt to take care of it like you did too and now i would never go back! your hair is beautiful! — also where did you buy your curlsmith products from in the UK, as i can’t seem to find them anywhere! ????????

  6. HI There

omg i had pretty much the same hair journey as you! i used to beg my mom to get my thick indian hair thinned when i was 13 and she would be like "there's no way we're doing that!" & i'm really grateful she didn't let me LOL. eventually i got to college and learned not to brush my hair in order to get nice waves/curls, and eventually started wearing the hijab and haven't applied heat to my hair in nearly four years. wish i had youtubers like you when i was in grade school 🙂 masha Allah your hair is beautiful, Sheen!

hey Sheen, i've been on my curly girl journey for 3 years now and I've learned a few things along the way, you can take them and adapt them to your own situation or you can choose to ignore it, just thought I could share:1. The Curly Girl Method is overkill for most people as a sustainble way to mantain (idk how to write those words, english is not my first language) your hair, but I still recommend you do at least a year of the CGM to properly nourish your hair and let it get used to just being it's shape without any silicones or sulfates. This would be the perfect time to deep condition all the time and using all the leave-in conditioners, creams, smoothies and gels, but after you've done it for a few years (for me, it was 1 year and a half) you can start to tone it down on the creams and gels and leave-ins because your hair will be healthy enough to just exist in it's natural state without the help of these products.2. The thing that improved my hair THE MOST and literally changed my heir after only one wash day was to stop using terry cloth towels. I use an old 100% cotton t-shirt to dry my hair after the shower. First of all, the thin cloth harbors less bacteria and mold which can cause dry flaky scalp or sometimes even acne (because of the Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), which is the cause of about 90% of bumbs on the skin and scalp), but secondly, and most importantly, terry cloth towels dry out your hair TOO MUCH. The conventional towel is great at drying your hair quickly, that's why it's so commonly used, it has a lot of micro and macro fibers that quickly absorb any and all the water it comes into contact with, because of that, it can cronichally dry out your hair and cause a lot of frizz and breakage.3. Ploping is amazing for when you're starting out and your hair is just starting to find it's place and shape within your hair. 4. Curlier doesn't mean better, and not because you start to have wavier hair, instead of the beautiful 3b curls you used to have, makes you any less of a curly girl or somehow invalidates you as a person or your curly girl journey. I'm not saying that curlier hair isn't absolutely gorgeous, I just mean that your hair changes and fluctuates and if your curls start to loosen up, that doesn't make you any less of a CG.I think that's all the advice I have for now but if any of you have any questions i'd be glad to answer them. P.S. If I was you, I wouldn't use Cantu because some of it's products have rubbing alcohol, which can have really drying effects. You can find out if the cream has denatured alcohol by just flipping your product over and reading the ingredients, if it's like last in the list or really low, it's fine, but if it's in the middle or top, I wouldn't use it if I were you. This is not like "stop eating gluten and sudenly you will be a superhuman with no problems at all" voodoo, it's actually backed up by science and you can look it up in reputable sources.

I have hair that reaches my waist and it's curly (or wavy, I don't even know), but I have always brushed it when dry. And it's always frizzy. The thing that makes me mad is that in India, the products needed for curly hair aren't even conveniently available in the market. It's not advertised to us. All I see is straightened hair that fly with the wind. I can't relate. It's going to be years until I get to a curly hair routine. Until then, I will use shampoo, conditioner, and serum: whatever's available.

Love and appreciate this video. It encourages me to go on my own curly hair journey. I straighten my hair almost every week, but I want to finally learn how to embrace my natural curls ????
